The quote is Argo's death, Odyssey Book XVII: Ulysses returns to Ithaca after 20 years in disguise, unrecognized — except by his old dog, who lifts his head, wags his tail, and dies. Text is Ippolito Pindemonte's 18th-century Italian translation:
"Ed Argo, il fido can, poscia che visto ebbe dopo dieci anni e dieci Ulisse, gli occhi nel sonno della morte chiuse."

English:
"And Argo, the faithful hound, no sooner had he seen Ulysses, after twice ten years, than his eyes, in the sleep of death, he closed."
